Five rural Oxfordshire locations for the London commuter

Oxfordshire has long been a favourite for London commuters – and it’s easy to see why.

Bladon

Bladon is a quiet but lovely village located on the River Glyme, just under seven miles northwest of Oxford. Its relaxed nature and size make Bladon ideal for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

The church in Bladon is the burial site of Sir Winston Churchill and the village pub was even said to be frequented by him. All local amenities and services you might need can be found nearby in Woodstock and Blenheim Palace is only a stone’s throw away.

Located only a short drive from Hanborough station, this village is ideal for commuters. Trains to London run regularly and take as little as an hour.

Property prices in Bladon average at slightly under £500,000. The village offers a mix of detached, semi-detached and terraced housing.

Shipton-under-Wychwood

Shipton-under-Wychwood is located in the Evenlode valley in west Oxfordshire. It sits about four miles north of Burford on the edge of the Cotswolds.

Shipton is the largest of the three nearby Wychwood villages – all named after the ancient Wychwood royal hunting forest that you can still explore today.

Shipton is surrounded by several historic Cotswold towns and villages ensuring there is plenty to do in the local area. It even has its own cricket team to keep you entertained! You can drive to Oxford in under an hour and trains from the local station to London take 80 minutes.

Shipton-under-Wychwood is ideal for those looking for larger, detached houses. Property prices average just under £750,000.

Great Milton

Nestled just seven miles east of Oxford in the beautiful south Oxfordshire countryside is Great Milton. It is a quiet, peaceful, village, ideal for anyone looking to take a break from London life.

This village is home to Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, so great food will be right on your doorstep. There is also a charming local pub and good primary school very close by.

For those looking for an active social scene this village is worth considering. You can expect everything from classes and sporting activities to village fetes taking place all year round.

Great Milton has fantastic transport links to both Oxford and London. Trains from Haddenham and Thame Parkway will get you to London in 55 minutes and run every half-an-hour.

In the last year, the average house price in Great Milton has been around £1.2 million for four-to-five-bedroom properties. There is a wide array of cottages and semidetached housing priced around £500,000.

Dorchester-on-Thames

Steeped in history, Dorchester-on-Thames is a historic riverside village in south Oxfordshire.

The beautiful Dorchester Abbey, bustling high street, popular pubs and local sporting activities make this a highly desirable place to live in Oxfordshire.

Didcot Parkway train station is just 15 minutes away which will get you to London in 40 minutes. Oxford, Abingdon and Didcot are also all under 30 minutes away by car.

Houses in Dorchester on Thames average around £750,000. Semi detached and terrace housing tends to be valued between £300,000 to £500,000.

Ewelme

The charming village of Ewelme lies in a picturesque valley in south Oxfordshire. Ewelme has the advantage of being off the beaten track but still close enough to plenty of local amenities and larger towns.

The beauty of the surrounding countryside is what attracts many people to Ewelme. Trains from nearby Didcot Parkway take only 40 minutes to London Paddington. Oxford and Abingdon are also conveniently 20 minutes away by car.

Houses in Ewelme had an overall average price of around £900,000 last year. Most detached properties sold for over £1 million. Semi detached and terraced housing sold at around half that price.
