Five of the Best Pubs in Oxfordshire

As autumn settles in and fireworks light up the evenings, there’s nothing quite like a long walk with the family, kicking through leaves and ending the day with a drink at a cosy pub. Here are five of Oxfordshire’s finest, each offering a unique experience for locals and visitors alike.

The Bear Inn, Oxford

Established in 1242, The Bear Inn is Oxford’s oldest pub. Tucked just off the High Street at the corner of Alfred St and Blue Boar St, it’s famed for its creaky floorboards, collection of cut-off ties, and low ceilings—mind your head if you’re over six feet tall! With an extensive range of local ales and a welcoming open fire in winter, it’s the perfect spot to relax after exploring the city centre or Christchurch Meadow. The pub moved from its original High Street location in the early 1800s, but its historic charm remains.

The Nut Tree Inn, Murcott

Mike and Imogen North have run The Nut Tree Inn since 2006, earning a Michelin Star in 2008 and holding onto it ever since. This picturesque 15th-century thatched pub sits between the River Ray and Otmoor, with a duck pond out front. Inside, exposed beams and fireplaces create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The food is exceptional, with a focus on quality ingredients and attention to detail. Bird-spotting on Otmoor and local walks add to the experience—just be sure to book ahead if you want to dine.

The Plough, Hanney

Whether you’re stopping in for a pint or booking a table for their renowned Sunday Roasts, The Plough promises a warm welcome from landlord Owain Jones, one of Oxfordshire’s most convivial publicans. Together with head chef Luke Mayor, they offer regular cheese and wine nights, a monthly quiz, and “Fat Tuesdays” (three small plates, chips, and two drinks for £30). It’s a great stop after exploring the Vale of White Horse walking trails, and their wine selection—supplied by The Oxford Wine Company —is excellent. Stay up to date with events via their active social media presence.

The White Hart, Fyfield

Flagstone floors and a vaulted ceiling greet you at The White Hart in Fyfield. Regularly recognised for its delicious food (holder of 2AA Rosettes), it’s a favourite among locals and visitors. Owners Mark and Kay Chandler have lovingly restored this 15th-century pub since 2005, making it a must-visit after a walk through Bagley Wood or nearby Boars Hill, with stunning views of Oxford.

The Back Lane Tavern, Woodstock

A favourite of Oxford Property Consulting, The Back Lane Tavern is where the team often unwinds at week’s end. In winter, you’ll find Greg stoking the fire, while Holly, Jen, and the team ensure a warm welcome. Tucked away on Park Lane in Woodstock, it’s cosy and full of nooks to hide away in. The Sunday Roast is outstanding, and executive chef Johnny Parke’s small plates menu is worth a visit on its own. If you’re exploring Blenheim Palace or enjoying their Christmas offerings, make time for a detour.

Whether you’re seeking a family treat, a new spot to try, or simply a warm winter drink, Oxfordshire’s pubs offer something for everyone. We’d love to hear your thoughts about your favourite pubs—do let us know!
